Major Duties/
Responsibilities:
Responsible for Crashworthiness development of advanced vehicle structure concepts for Vehicle Programs in Advanced Vehicle Development Center.
Uses CAE to lead the vehicle design, while balancing all applicable Global Safety Requirements for specific area of responsibility (i.e Side Impacts).
Performs Computer Aided Engineering simulations to evaluate full vehicle crashworthiness performance for high speed Frontal, Side, Rear impacts or low speed Front and Rear loadcases, etc. using LS-DYNA software and is capable of handling every standard Crashworthiness loadcase, including the most complex.
Utilizes GM Safety CAE standard work procedures for all simulations and assures high quality models.
Generates sound and timely technical solutions to meet vehicle crashworthiness performance targets outlined in the Vehicle Technical Specifications and balances safety requirements based on the results of crash simulations for the major safety loadcases.
Generates feasible vehicle design recommendations and works with engineering functions, program teams, suppliers, manufacturing and others to implement design changes as required to achieve vehicle performance.
Conducts optimization studies by utilizing optimization CAE tools, including DOE/ DFSS techniques to optimize vehicle designs to meet performance requirements while minimizing mass and cost.
Uses advanced CAE tools and methods to optimize the structural designs. Improves structural efficiency - achieves improved performance with less mass (topology, shape, weld/adhesive, gauge, lightweight materials, etc.).
Attends post-test tear-downs as the Vehicle Proving Grounds to interpret measurements, conduct analysis, and correlate CAE to test results.
Works with people around the world in global and collaborative environment.
Produces concise management summaries and report-outs that meet the needs of directors and Chief Engineers.

Qualifications
Basic Required
Bachelors, Masters or Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering from an (ABET) accredited University.: Mechanical, Aero, Civil, Materials, Mechanics, Applied Physics
5
years' experience in full vehicle Crashworthiness simulation
Demonstrated proficiency in LS-DYNA, PRIMER ANIMATOR, HYPERWORKS and other CAE tools.
Knowledge of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) and Global Safety Requirements and Standards.
Knowledge of statistical and optimization tools and techniques
Knowledge of engineering theory and application in automotive structures development
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Demonstrated ability to work independently and with others
High level of analytical ability where problems are unusual or difficult and ability to integrate complex systems
High level of interpersonal skills to work effectively with others
Basic Preferred
DFSS Green Belt (or Equivalent certification in statistical and optimization tools and techniques) - Black Belt Preferred (for Internal GM postings only)
Familiarity with manufacturing processes
